Families should start preparing for
Kindergarten (K2 in the BPS) a full year in
advance of their start date, which is the
September before their child turns 5.
  For a
few families, it may start sooner. The Boston
Public Schools has a growing number of seats
in K1 programs for children who will be 4 by
September 1; and a very limited number of seats for  K0 programs for children who are 3 by September 1.

September - October

Look at a Boston Public School Assignment Zone Map to determine which zone you live in.
Try some of the fun activities you can do in your home or at one of the many places for children and families located around Boston.

November - December

Visit schools using our Visiting Schools Check List and School Preview Time Schedule.
Pick up your own copy of our Home is a Child’s First School poster.

January –  February

Continue visiting schools.
Come to the annual BPS Showcase of Schools (details for 2007, TBD). Talk to principals, teachers and other parents, check out children’s work and identify any other schools you would like to visit.
Go to any of the BPS Family Resource Centers to register your child and pick up a free kindergarten gift bag.
Don’t forget to read to your child and try some of the other activities Countdown suggests to help get ready for school.

 March

Families who registered in the first round of registration receive school assignments in mid to late March.
Families who are not assigned to any of the schools they choose need to go back to one of the Family Resource Centers to choose new schools.
Keep preparing your child for school.

April – June

Schools invite newly assigned families to Welcome Sessions to see the school and meet each other.
Attend some of the workshops that BPS and other community organizations hold for new families.
Visit some of the interesting places around the city for families and children.

July - August

If you are eligible for a bus, you will receive information in the mail in August.
Look for information on Kindergarten Days Parades across the city!
Look for an invitation to a celebration at the Children’s Museum.

September

School begins the Monday after Labor Day!
